A Healthy Mouth = A Healthy Body

“Mouth-body connection” is a real thing, affecting everyone. Multiple clinical studies have shown that the health of your mouth impacts the health of your body. Most of us have never known that our oral health can affect and directly correlate to diseases and issues such as arthritis, heart disease, premature births, to list a few.

One of the ways oral health impacts overall health is by creating entry points to the bloodstream. These entry points or openings in unhealthy inflamed gums allow microorganisms like viruses or bacteria to enter the body, possibly causing and worsening chronic health conditions.

Even recently, oral health has been linked to mental health. The connection is not so much linked through a patient’s current oral health, but more of the side *effects mental health has on your mouth. Low energy, anxiety, fear (visiting medical providers for care and treatment), and difficulty doing day-to-day tasks like brushing your teeth will lead to further issues down the road physically, mentally, and emotionally.

How do you prevent and keep issues like these from happening? Continue with proper oral health care.
If you aren’t sure what to do, here is a cheat sheet:

  • Brush for 2 mins twice a day

  • Floss

  • Visit your dentist at least 2x a year

Looking for extra credit, consider some of these tips:

  • Use fluoride toothpaste to help limit plaque and bacteria build-up.

  • Mouthwash. What does it do? Reaches hard to brush area and reduces acid in the mouth that harm your teeth

  • Your tongue is in your mouth, hanging out with the plaque. Brush or scrape it off.

  • Drink water. It helps clear out excess acids in the mouth and also hydrate it. A dry mouth is the enemy of your teeth.

Putting action on your oral health by following recommended oral health care guidelines, you are taking a proactive step towards a healthier, complete you.
